Luffy is a young man with a slim muscular build, shaggy black hair, round black eyes, and an average height. He is famously known for his straw hat, which was given to him by the legendary pirate captain “Red-Haired” Shanks, who received it from Gol D. Roger. Luffy’s attire includes blue shorts with cuffs, sandals, and a sleeveless red vest. He also has a scar with two stitches underneath his left eye, which he earned as a child by stabbing himself to prove his toughness to Shanks. During the Summit War of Marineford, Luffy was severely wounded by Akainu, leaving a large X-shaped scar on his chest.
Throughout most of the series, Luffy wears the same outfit as his male crewmates. However, he occasionally changes his attire to suit the climate of an island but always returns to his trademark red vest and blue shorts. He has been known to wear his usual outfit in different colors and add miscellaneous items from time to time, such as during Thriller Bark and Sabaody Archipelago. According to Eiichiro Oda, Luffy does not know how to dress stylishly and is advised on how to dress by more fashionable team members like Nami, Usopp, Sanji, and Robin.
During various arcs of the series, Luffy has worn different outfits, such as two different parkas during the Drum Island Arc, desert robes during the Arabasta Arc, and an afro during the Long Ring Long Land Arc. He also wore a white T-shirt with the Galley-La Company emblem during the Post-Enies Lobby Arc and an orange vest and red shorts during the Thriller Bark Arc. Luffy always wears his straw hat no matter where he is, and from the Arabasta Arc onward, he has a string strap sewn on by Nami to hang it on his back.
The Gomu Gomu no Mi, previously known as the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, grants the user’s body rubber-like properties, increasing their strength and flexibility, allowing them to fight in any way they choose. This ability has earned the user the title of “Warrior of Liberation,” bringing freedom and joy to those around them. The power of this fruit is considered to be the most ridiculous in the world. In this state, the user’s heartbeat takes on a musical rhythm known as the “Drums of Liberation,” and their appearance changes with white hair and clothes (except for their signature straw hat, belt, and sandals), red ring-like pupils, and swirling eyebrows.
As an awakened Zoan, the user gains greater strength, speed, and durability than those without this power. They can even fight and defeat powerful foes such as Kaidou, an infamous Emperor feared for his strength. Their malleability allows them to wrap around weapons and even manipulate the environment around them to be rubbery. They can utilize both the limb inflation of Gear 3 and the muscle inflation of Gear 4 without needing to pump air into their body first, greatly increasing their strength. They can even transform themselves into a giant of massive size.
The user’s rubbery nature can extend to their surroundings, allowing them to bounce off surfaces or make them rubbery to cushion themselves from powerful blows. This power seems to be able to affect organic matter as well. Overall, the Gomu Gomu no Mi is a formidable power that allows its user to fight in unique and versatile ways.
