Monkey D. Luffy, also known as “Straw Hat Luffy” and commonly referred to as “Straw Hat,” is the captain and founder of the infamous and powerful Straw Hat Pirates. He is also the strongest fighter among them. His ultimate goal is to become the Pirate King by finding the legendary treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger. This achievement would help him fulfill a dream that he has only shared with Shanks, his brothers, and crew. Luffy believes that being the Pirate King would give him the most freedom in the world.

Luffy was born in Foosha Village to Monkey D. Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army, and the grandson of Monkey D. Garp, a Marine hero. Their family carries the initial and Will of D. At age 7, Luffy accidentally ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which turned his body into rubber. Shanks gifted Luffy his signature straw hat as part of a promise to meet again someday after Luffy became a great pirate. Luffy grew up on Dawn Island under the care of Curly Dadan and befriended “Fire Fist” Portgas D. Ace and Revolutionary Chief-of-Staff Sabo.

Luffy has fought against numerous global powers, including the most powerful pirates in the East Blue, Marines, Seven Warlords of the Sea, Cipher Pol, World Nobles, and even the Four Emperors of the Grand Line. He has emerged victorious in most of these battles, invaded Enies Lobby, escaped Impel Down, and was a focal figure in the Summit War of Marineford. He has either defeated or befriended seven of the eleven known past or present Warlords prior to the organization’s dissolution. Luffy’s accomplishments and heritage have earned him a reputation for being “reckless” and “insane,” causing him to be labeled as a “Dangerous Future Element” and earning the wrath of Fleet Admiral Sakazuki, Marine Headquarters, and even the World Government.

Luffy has a talent for attracting followers and has unwillingly become the leader of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, consisting of seven pirate crews who swore to come to his aid whenever he wishes. After defeating Kaidou during the Raid on Onigashima, Luffy was officially declared one of the Four Emperors by the World Government alongside Buggy, replacing Kaidou and Big Mom.

Luffy’s bounty heavily reflects his tremendous strides in his life of piracy. His bounty increased from 30,000,000 to 100,000,000 after defeating Crocodile in Arabasta. After his crew’s invasion into and escape from Enies Lobby, his bounty increased to 300,000,000. His bounty went up to 500,000,000 after the Dressrosa Arc and all the way to 1,500,000,000 after the global revelation that he is Sabo’s brother and the existence of Straw Hat Grand Fleet becoming public. After leading the Raid on Onigashima and defeating Kaidou, he became a member of the Four Emperors, increasing his bounty to 3,000,000,000.
