Obanai

Obanai is an individual known for his harsh and strict nature, showing little concern for those who disregard the rules of the Demon Slayer Corps. He holds unrealistic expectations for his fellow Demon Slayers and berated Tengen Uzui for sustaining severe injuries against what he considered the “weakest” Upper Rank demon. When Tengen expressed his desire to retire, Obanai insisted that he should “fight to the death.” Obanai’s devotion to the future of the Demon Slayer Corps often comes at the expense of others, as he used lower-ranked Demon Slayers as obstacles during Hashira Training for minor reasons. He views newer recruits as weak and incapable of improvement, being surprised when Tengen informs him that Tanjiro Kamado survived a battle. Additionally, Obanai has a habit of pointing at people while berating them or speaking ill of someone.

Despite his merciless personality, there are two people whom Obanai deeply cares about: Kagaya Ubuyashiki and Mitsuri Kanroji. He has romantic feelings for Mitsuri, which he subtly shows by sharing meals and giving her gifts like the green socks she wears. At times, Obanai’s overprotectiveness of Mitsuri is evident, and he even threatens Tanjiro for growing too close to her. His attraction to Mitsuri stems from her cheerful personality that remains unaffected by the difficult training she went through. Talking with her makes him forget his past hardships and allows him to feel like an ordinary young man. Like the other Hashira, Obanai holds a great deal of respect for Kagaya.

Obanai’s traumatic past has left him with a profound sense of self-hatred. He was born into a selfish and immoral clan that would sacrifice newborn children to demons for financial gain. Even years after his family’s death, he feels as if they continue to haunt him, preventing him from moving forward. He believes that in order to be worthy of Mitsuri, he must first cleanse himself of his tainted blood and die. His upbringing, where he was treated as a mere tool by the women in his family, has also led to his gynophobia. The scars he received during his past are covered by face bandages that he never removes until the final battle.

Obanai possesses an incredible sense of determination, as he continues to fight against Muzan even when he is blinded and covered in wounds. He demonstrates his ability to protect Giyu and Tanjiro throughout the battle, and he even thanks Tanjiro for his help and takes a blow for him, showing that he can let go of his initial grudges and become friendlier with those he previously mistreated.
