Haganezuka
Hotaru’s attire consists of a haori with a sunflower pattern and a spotted head scarf covering his head. As with the other swordsmiths, he conceals his identity by wearing a Hyottoko mask, a wooden festival mask that covers his face. When he travels, he adds a large woven hat with floral wind chimes hanging from it to his ensemble. In the Swordsmith Village Arc, Hotaru appears more muscular than before, having trained in the mountains. Unmasked, he has long black hair, sharp eyes, and thick eyebrows with a distinctive shape. However, after being attacked by the Upper Rank Five demon Gyokko, Hotaru has numerous deep scars and cuts all over his body, including an X-shaped one on his face, and has lost the use of his left eye.
Hotaru is a passionate swordsmith who cares little about anything else besides his craft. He can talk about swords for hours on end, a trait that sets him apart from other swordsmiths. However, his passion also makes him easily enraged when his creations are broken, especially by Tanjiro Kamado. When angry, he calms himself down by eating mitarashi dango or can be subdued by being pinned down or tickled. Due to his intense and asocial behavior, Hotaru is unmarried and has lost clients. Despite this, he is happy that Tanjiro still trusts him to make his swords. Hotaru’s concentration on sword making is so intense that he is unaware of his surroundings, even when under attack by a demon. As a perfectionist, any imperfection on a blade hurts him deeply and he must restart the whole process if interrupted.
Hotaru comes from a family of swordsmiths called Haganezuka, who reside in the Swordsmith Village. When he was young, Hotaru was very difficult to handle, causing his parents to suffer a mental breakdown. The village chief, Tecchin Tecchikawahara, took him under his wing and raised him. Hotaru dislikes his given name, which he finds too cute, and often criticizes the chief for it. He has had a temper since childhood, throwing tantrums and wandering off. Under the chief’s guidance, Hotaru learned the art of sword-making and became a swordsmith who creates Nichirin Swords for the Demon Slayers. When Tanjiro passed the Final Selection, Hotaru was tasked by the Corps to craft his sword.
